I’ve Got the Joy!

I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart.

Where?

Down in my heart.

Where?

Down in my heart.

I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart.

Down in my heart to stay

And I’m so happy

So very happy

I’ve got the love of Jesus in my heart!

Down in my heart

And I’m so happy

So very happy

I’ve got the love of Jesus in my heart!

As I was growing up this song was one of my favorite songs. I remember singing  it the car on trips, and someone (usually me) would use a funny voice or accent on the “Where?”

It is so lighthearted and bubbly that it just makes me smile.

As I grew up though, I wasn’t usually a joyful person.

As a teenager and young adult, I frequently struggled with bitterness and depression.

But recently I have come to realize something about joy:

Joy does not equal happiness.

And

Joy puts the smile on your face even when you are in the midst of trials.

Joy goes deeper than happiness.

Happiness is a shallow emotion, and it comes and goes like the waves on the sand.

Happiness is usually dependent on our circumstances.

Joy, on the other hand, is steady and abiding like the mountains. They might change with the different seasons of life, but they are always there.

Like the mountains, joy looks different with each season of life but it is always there. One day it might look like uncontainable happiness, and the next it might look like smiling through the tears.

But when you have the love of Jesus in your heart, you have joy!
