God’s Still Working on Me

I’m a bit of a perfectionist. When I’m not able to do things right the first time, I have a tendency to get discouraged and give up. As I have gotten older, I have gotten better about letting go of the discouragement and continuing to persevere, but there are times when perfectionist in me grabs hold and won’t let me forget the mistakes that I have made.

“I’m not good enough.”

“I should have known better.”

“Why do I always do THAT?”

At times, I think I should have arrived. I should be so much farther ahead than I am. I beat myself for things I have no control over or can’t redo.

I forget how far I’ve come and get focused and become overwhelmed by how much farther I have to go.

And I forget about GRACE.

I forget that His grace covers me, and that He is still working on me. I’m not perfect, but I am being made perfect. I’m a work in progress, and because He covers me in grace, I have to give myself grace when I make a mistake.

I was reminded of that recently through a song that I used to sing as a child. It was one of my favorites. It was one of the few songs that I managed to get up and sing in front of the church, and after not thinking about it in years, it came to mind yesterday.

While this song was written for children, it is a great reminder to adults too…He is still working on us.

He’s Still Working on Me

There really ought to be a sign upon my heart
Don’t judge him yet, there’s an unfinished part
But I’ll be better just according to His plan
Fashioned by the Master’s loving hands

He’s still working on me
To make me what I need to be
It took him just a week to make the moon and stars
The sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars
How loving and patient He must be
‘Cause He’s still workin’ on me

In the mirror of His word
Reflections that I see
Makes me wonder why He never gave up on me
But He loves me as I am and helps me when I pray
Remember He’s the potter, I’m the clay

He’s still working on me
To make me what I need to be
It took him just a week to make the moon and stars
The sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars
How loving and patient He must be
‘Cause He’s still workin’ on me

He’s still working on me
To make me what I need to be
It took him just a week to make the moon and stars
The sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars
How loving and patient He must be
‘Cause He’s still workin’ on me

  2. Good Morning! I’m bopping in from Roxy’s blog and I must say this is a wonderful reminder for the day. Well actually more like in all the days to come. I’m so glad God doesn’t just stop and say Hey, you’re finished, there’s nothing left for me to do in you. Wow… that would be a sad day. I’m so blessed to know God works in me daily and to have his Grace is so important. I’m a bit of a perfectionist too and I try my hardest to not give up when things don’t go my way. I don’t want them to go my way, I want them to go God’s way, Always!

You have such a sweet blog. Thank you for sharing!

    Blessings,
    Amy

  4. Have to say this is one of my favorite songs from my childhood (well still is one of my favorites) just because of how true it is! He created everything in 6 days, but yet He is still working on me, yes He must be VERY patient!

    1. Yes, Lauren! He definitely has to be patient.

  5. Crying…again! I remember that song so well from years ago, but I didn’t realize then how full of grace, the lyrics are. Even at 57, God still has a lot of work to do in me! Blessed to visit here today Missy! Love & prayers, in Jesus, Cynthia

    1. Cynthia, isn’t great how the Lord works? We can read something or hear something over and over again. Then one day we read it or we hear it, and it is like the Lord opens our eyes to something new in it. It is something that has been there all along, but we couldn’t see it.

  6. Misty a great reminder for all of us…no matter what our age is. Oh yes, and GRACE! Where would we be without it. I loved your honesty. Such a great post with a great message. Blessings…<…CAthy
