You Don’t Have…

Have you ever longed for something? Dreamed about it happening, but been afraid to pray for it?

Do you feel selfish when you pray for something that you want?

I do. I have a hard time praying for something I wish for.

I have a dream that I have longed to come true for years, but I feel selfish when I pray for something I want or even need.

Prayer becomes not my first course of action, but no course of action.

When I start to pray something for myself, I end up thinking about those who have even less than I do or about those who need healing, and I think I should be praying for them, not me.

But lately when I think about what I do not have, a verse from James has been coming to mind:

“You do not have, because you do not ask.” James 4:2b

The Lord knows my wants and my needs. He knows my thoughts, my desires, and my heart before I know them, but “you do not have, because you do not ask.”

He longs to give me good things in life (and I’m not talking about worldly things like money and power). He longs to give me things that He says is good.

But “you do not have, because you do not ask.”

I try to make things happen in my own time and my own way, and I fail.

“You do not have, because you do not ask.

It’s hard for me to ask for things for myself.

“You do not have, because you do not ask.”

I feel selfish when I pray for what I want.

“You do not have, because you do not ask.”

He wants to give me good things if only I would ask.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:7-11 ESV)

But if I don’t ask, I can’t receive.

I can ask Him for a dream. I can ask Him for good things.

You can too. It is not selfish for us to ask when He says that we can.

  1. I pray a lot to and I have dream and sometimes it is hard for me to ask God for things for myself.

  2. I really enjoy reading your blog. Thank you for the Bible verses.

    1. You’re welcome! Thank you for reading.

  3. What a great reminder! Also, sometimes we rationalize that God knows everything anyway. But it’s a show of dependence to ask our Father, and a show of faith to believe He will provide.

  4. Yes, yes, yes! I have felt exactly the same way and this is something the Lord has been trying to teach me for a long time. And there’s a difference between asking for something I need vs. asking for something I want. I have more of a problem with asking for my “wants.” In the past couple of years He’s really been hammering on this point with me: pray fervently, ask Me, tell Me what’s on your heart. I’m still working on it.

    1. I know. This is such an area of my life that He is working on. I can go to Him and ask Him for anything and everything. Does that mean the answer is always going to be yes? No, it doesn’t but I should still ask because He wants to give me good things.
