All Things Work Together for Good

Reading about when dreams go wrong and reflecting on my own life when my dreams have gone in a different direction than I thought that they would has reminded me of a song that I would listen to and sing as a young girl.

This song was written by Susan Cantrell, and became known when the Cathedrals sang it. It is based on Romans 8:28. Actually that is the title “Romans 8:28.”

I don’t know if you have ever heard the song or paid close attention to the lyrics as you have listened, but I think that they fit so well with our discussion about when dreams go wrong and self-sabotage that I want you to pay close attention to them. (By the way, it starts with the chorus.)

All things work together for good
To them that love the Lord
Who are called according to His purpose, my friend,
It’s written in His Word.
In the book of Romans 8:28
To the church the Apostle Paul did state
That all things work together for good
To them that love the Lord

There are many promises in God’s Word
Just to hear them thrills my soul
They were all written there just for me
I have no doubt that it’s so
But if there is one promise
That I’d have to choose
As the one that can always take away my blues
It’s all things work together for good
To them that love the Lord

(chorus)

Now Satan can rob me of my happiness
But he can’t take away my joy
‘Cause joy is the fruit of the Spirit in me
That’s something that he can’t destroy
So when it seems that everything in my life has gone wrong
I can still wear a smile
And I can still wear a song
All things work together for good
To them that love the Lord.

(Chorus)

(Tag) All things work together for good to them that love the Lord

The song and the Bible verse are great reminders that God uses everything for our good including those dreams that go wrong sometimes.

And reflecting back I can see how those things that I thought were so horrible at the time turned out to be for my good and for the good of others too. Oh, there are a few things that I’m still working out how they could have been for my good, but for the most part I can see how even lessons learned in a time that I had distanced myself from the Lord have turned out to be for my good.
