The Single Life: Autumn Bucket List 2014

The kids are back in school, and this weekend is Labor Day weekend which is considered the unofficial end of summer. It is a time when people pull out their autumn bucket lists. The ones that are filled with hayrides, bonfires, apple picking, etc. For the last couple of years I have made my own autumn bucket lists. This year I plan to do something a little different with my autumn bucket list. This year the Lord has been teaching me a lot about community and relationships so I want this year’s bucket list to be focused on relationships and community building and loving others. It is more about being…

    2013 Autumn Bucket List

So once again, a new season hits and out comes all these moms with fun bucket lists of things to do with their children this autumn. Well, what’s a single girl to do? Make her own list of course! So here is my autumn bucket list! It is a lot shorter than my summer bucket list (because I have to be honest and say that I didn’t manage to do half of the things on my summer bucket list). 1) “Boo” some of my neighbors I’ve seen this idea floating around the Pinterest world for a couple of years now. I haven’t attempted to do it, but as I have…

    Grandma Mills’ Oatmeal Cookies

I love cookies, all types of cookies, but I have never really cared for oatmeal cookies. There is only one recipe for oatmeal cookies that I will use and that I will eat. It is the favorite recipe of all my aunts, uncles, and cousins on my mom’s side of the family. And according to my family, nobody but my sister and I can make them the way that Grandma did. So today I’m going to share with you, my great-grandmother’s recipe for oatmeal cookies and I hope that you will love them as much as my family does. OATMEAL COOKIES   ½ cup shortening or butter ½ cup brown…

    Fall Favorite: Fresh Apple Cake

I love autumn! I love the changing colors of the trees, the cooler temperatures, the campfires or fire pits, the apples, the pumpkins, and the food! Hot chocolate, doughnuts, apple fritters, apple cake, apple butter, applesauce…did I mention apples? Today’s recipe is fresh apple cake. I found this recipe in the Kansas City Star Magazine, October 24, 1971. It was submitted by a Mrs. Frank C. Farrell of Kansas City. I followed her recipe very closely because this is the first time that I have ever made a cake from scratch. I will admit that since I am not a fan of pecans that my finished cake will not have…

    Taco Meatloaf

While I was going through notebooks with recipes written down by my great-grandmothers, I came across a “cookbook” from the Kansas City Star Magazine. This cookbook was dated October 24, 1971, and it has many recipes that were submitted by cooks from throughout the Kansas City metro area. One of the recipes that caught my fancy was a taco meatloaf. I love tacos and I love meatloaf so I thought why not. The recipe was submitted to the Kansas City Star by a Mrs. Ray G. Roberts from Overland Park, KS.    I made this as the main dish for our Monday night family dinners. Almost every Monday…

    The One Constant

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of me. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.—John 1:1-4   We live in a world of constant changes. As we have seen in the last few years, nothing in our lives are certain. From pandemics to economic stressors, we have gone through a lot in the last few years. If you are anything like…
